“Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” Psalm 147:5
This verse summarizes several aspects of God’s unlimited nature:
“Great is our Lord” speaks to God’s inherent majesty and supremacy. He is beyond comprehension.
“Mighty in power”: This emphasizes God’s omnipotence. There is nothing He cannot do.
“His understanding has no limit”: This highlights God’s omniscience. His knowledge is infinite and complete.
God’s unlimited power is a central theme in the Bible. He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. In Genesis 1:1, it states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). This effortless creation from nothing underscores the limitless power of God. Moreover, Jeremiah 32:17 emphasizes His omnipotence: “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.”
God’s omnipotence is one of His most awe-inspiring attributes, referring to His all-encompassing power and ability to do anything that aligns with His nature and will. This attribute is foundational to the Christian understanding of God.
God’s omnipotence is not just evident in the act of creation but also in His ongoing sustenance of the universe. Colossians 1:17 says, “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” This suggests that every moment of existence is dependent on God’s sustaining power.
The Bible is replete with examples of miracles that showcase God’s omnipotence. From parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22) to raising Jesus from the dead (Matthew 28:5-6), these events defy natural laws and illustrate God’s ability to intervene in the physical world in extraordinary ways.
God’s omnipotence is also crucial in the realm of salvation. The transformation of a sinner’s heart, the resurrection of the dead, and the promise of eternal life all require divine power. Ephesians 1:19-20 speaks of “the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.”
God’s power extends over the affairs of nations and rulers. Daniel 2:21 states, “He changes times and seasons; He deposes kings and raises others. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to the discerning.” This highlights God’s ultimate control and authority over human history, from hardening Pharaoh’s heart (Exodus 7:13-14) to enabling King Cyrus to allow the Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple that was destroyed by the Babylonians. (Ezra 1:1-2).
In summary, God’s omnipotence is a central aspect of His nature, manifesting in creation, sustenance, miracles, salvation, and sovereignty. It affirms that God is unlimited in power, He is all-powerful, capable of accomplishing His will and purposes, and provides a source of comfort and assurance to believers.
As we reflect on this attribute of God, we are invited to trust in His unlimited power through our Lord Jesus Christ, and His sovereign control over all things. Cast all your burdens and worries, problems, upon the all-powerful God because He cares for you.
PRAYERS
1. Acknowledging God’s Omnipotence: Father, I stand in awe of your limitless power. There is nothing too difficult for you. I bring my challenges before you, knowing that you can do exceedingly abundantly above all that I ask or think. Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now to him who can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever. Amen.”
2. Praising God’s Omniscience: Lord, you know everything about me – my thoughts, my fears, my hopes. I praise you for your perfect understanding. Help me to trust in your wisdom, even when I don’t understand your ways. Psalm 139:4: “Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.”
3. Seeking God’s Presence: God, I thank you that you are always with me. Your presence is comfort and strength. Help me to be aware of your nearness and to find peace in you. Psalm 139:7-10: “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”
4. Trusting in God’s Eternality and Immutability: Lord, you are eternal and unchanging. Your love is steadfast, and your promises are sure. Help me to anchor my hope in your unchanging nature, especially during times of uncertainty. Malachi 3:6: “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
5. Submitting to God’s Sovereignty: Father, I recognize your sovereignty over all things. I submit my life to your will. Help me to trust in your perfect plan, even when it doesn’t make sense to me. Proverbs 16:9: “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
6. Experiencing God’s Transcendence and Immanence: God, you are both high and lifted, yet you are also near to the brokenhearted. Help me to experience the awe of your transcendence and the comfort of your immanence. Isaiah 57:15: “For this is what the high and exalted One says—he who lives forever, whose name is Holy: “I live in a high and holy place but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
7. Asking for Faith to Grasp God’s Limitlessness: Lord, sometimes your greatness feels overwhelming. I confess that my faith is weak. Help me to believe more fully in your unlimited nature and to live in the light of your boundless love and power. Mark 9:24: “Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said with tears, “I believe; help my unbelief!””
Welcome to March 2025, the month of the unlimited, all-powerful God. Psalm 55: 22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. He shall perfect all that concerns you in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
